A modelling exploration of branch extension, defoliation responses, and carbohydrate physiology in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.)

چکیده
The PEA (Physiologically Explicit Approach) cotton model is a mechanistic, L-system (Hanan 1997) model of growth processes utilising carbohydrate production, translocation and allocation. In Thornby et al (2003), we used the PEA cotton model to investigate the phenomenon of compensatory growth in partially defoliated cotton seedlings. Experiments showed that the development rate of cotton seedlings’ main stems was not affected by defoliation regimes of varying severity (25-65%) and spatial positioning (leaves close to and distant from the main stem apex). Accordingly, we used an obligate apex development pattern based on degree-days accumulation in the model. By including obligate main stem development, the PEA model was able to demonstrate near complete compensation for lost leaf tissue. Here, we extend the PEA cotton model to include mechanisms for branch development and physiology.

Assessment of genetic variability, heritability and association of plant attributes with lint yield and fiber quality in advanced lines of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.)
Information on genetic variability and heritability of plant attributes and their correlation with lint yield and fiber quality is important for planning breeding and selection strategies for prediction of genetic gains in cotton breeding programs. For these purpose, a field experiment was carried out using randomized complete block design with four replications in 2016 and 2017 at Hashem-Abad ...

Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) is a source of edible oil and fatty acids (FAs). In this study, embryos’ explants were cultured in MS medium with different concentration of plant growth regulators (phytohormones) include BA, IAA, IBA, 2, 4- D and NAA, to finding the relationship of hormone and organogenesis with oil and FAs content. Oil was extracted with chloroform and methanol. FAs o...

A cytogenetic study was performed on M4 generation of gamma irradiated lines of Shirpan cultivar of tetraploid cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.). A significant difference was observed in cytogenetical characteristics such as the number and type of quadrivalents as well as percentage of cells showing abnormality among the irradiated and non irradiated lines. Cytomixis and post- pachytene diffuse st...
متن کاملLeaf area relationships to plant vegetative characteristics in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) grown in a temperate sub-humid environment
Measurement or estimation of leaf area is essential for understanding crop responses to experimental treatments. The objective of this study was to develop regression models for estimating leaf area of field-grown cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) from measurements of leaf dry weight (LDW), vegetative components (stems and leaves) dry weight (VDW) and plant height (PH). Three cotton cultivars (Del...
